Superb Smoothies

In today’s world smoothies are synonymous with health. Besides tasting great smoothies are a quick and fast way to get in your 5-7 daily servings of fruit and vegetables. It seems like there is a smoothie shop on every corner and most gyms now offer a smoothie bar. While there are a lot of smoothies sold at specialty shops that are good for you there are quite a few that are not. For example, McDonalds sells a blueberry pomegranate smoothie that for a 12 ounce serving has 220 calories, 3 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. This is not a lot of calories but it is a nutrient poor drink. With that low number of protein and fiber you will be hungry again in no time. My suggestion is that you make the majority of your smoothies at home where you can control what you put in it and save a little money. A banana strawberry protein smoothie made at home might have a few more calories in it but it will keep you fuller longer which will decrease overall calorie consumption. Here are a couple of ways to order a smoothie when you are out:

1. Use fresh or frozen fruits instead of juices

2. Instead of getting a large choose a small or medium to save calories

3. Add milk for flavoring instead of syrups and sweeteners

4. Add veggies to increase volume and reduce calories

5. Add protein powder to keep you fuller longer
