Take A Hike

If you are like me running on a treadmill or walking in my neighborhood for cardio gets boring after a while. One way to burn a lot of calories and enjoy it is to walk a hiking trail. It is hard to get bored with elevation changes, tall trees, flowers, and lakes surrounding you. According to the AceFitness activity calculator a 200 pound person will burn an estimated 544 calories per hour of hiking. Hiking up and down hills will also challenge your core and other muscles of your lower body that tend to get ignored by just walking flat ground. Here are some tips for a fun and safe hike:

1. Wear proper equipment. Hiking boots are a given but breathable shorts/pants and shirts are a must have.

2. Hydrate. You will be exposed to the elements and sweating quite a bit. My suggestion is to pack 32oz of water for every hr you will be hiking

3. Pack sunscreen. During this time of the year the sun will out in full force. It is recommended that you use SPF 30 if you are going to be out hiking 2 or more hrs (www.rei.com)

4. Bring snacks. Burning a lot of calories means a refil will be needed sooner or later. Trail mixes, fruit, nuts, sandwiches, and other foods that do not need to be refrigerated are great to keep handy.

5. Pack a first aid kit. Being exposed to the outdoors means an increased chance of injury. Even minor injuries such as cuts need to be taken care of immediately instead of waiting until the trail is done.

6. Keep your cell phone fully charged in case there is an emergency that cannot be handled by using the first aid kit.
